Kyle Beckerman…In 1998!

United States Panama Gold Cup Soccer

For Kyle Beckerman, Real Salt Lake’s central midfielder and team captain, this is his shining moment, getting a callup from the U.S. national team for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup for his efforts in helping lead RSL from certain destruction to hope for a bright future.

Saturday night in Philadelphia, he solidified his place as only he could, with his flowing dreadlocks and inspired play leading the way to a second -half game tying goal–his first international goal–that all but crushed the hopes of Panama, bringing the U.S. back from what looked like certain defeat in the Americans’ 2-1 win Saturday. <via examiner.com>

Kyle Beckerman has come a long way since these photos were shot at a youth tournament last decade! Back then he was crushing opponents on a local scale and now he is doing it on the National level.

The best picture of the set has to be Beckerman celebrating a goal with his opponents walking away dejected in the background. It was a sign of things to come.

Does anyone know if any of Beckerman’s former youth teammates play in the MLS?

The team was FC Potomac, and Alex Yi (played internationally and briefly with MLS, now in the minor leagues, I believe) and Oguchi Onyewu (international and fixture on the US National Team) also played for the same team. All three were in the first group that went to the US Soccer U17 residency program in Bradenton, not that long after these photos were taken.

In the team photo (lower right), Yi is right behind Beckerman, and if you click on it to see the whole photo, you can see Onyewu on the left end of the photo.
